Boating Has Been Very Good To Us

1996 Wellcraft 21SL

After 3 years of trying to sell our Bayliner 2550, I traded it for this dayboat, 1996 Wellcraft 21SL. A nice little day boat, that is loads of fun to ride in. It also fits in nicely with my evil plan to keep our teenagers boating with us. They are old enough to drive it, and they have their boating licenses.

Sandusky Bay test drive # 1

July 07 - Happy Ours is the name of our new Wellcraft. First, we test-drive her in Sandusky Bay, and everything works great. Fun stuff and terrific gas mileage. After years of tanking up No Rules to the tune of 40 gallons/hour-cruising, Happy Ours is cheap on gas (4 cylinder). Also, it's fun being so close to the water. Not so much fun if there any wind and waves.

Boat Trailering etiquette

July 07 - This is the first boat that we trailer. Consequently, we really don't know what we're doing when it comes to public boat ramps.

Rule: Put boat in water
This one is easy; get in line and wait your turn.

Rule: Take boat out of water
What you should do is: Get in line with your car and trailer. Then, when it's your car/trailer's turn at the ramp, that is when you should pull your boat into the ramp (and not until). So, it's basically a two man job: You boat in temporarily to drop off someone to get the car, then pull your boat away from the dock and wait for your trailer to arrive. After the trailer is in place, then it's your turn to drive your boat to the dock for the pull-out.

Quick tip: Practice backing up with a trailer in a large parking lot.

2008

July 08 - Day Trip on Erie Canal
We trailered Happy Ours to Buffalo, while visiting my Dad. So, one day we went to Lockport and put in at the Nelson Goehle Marina (no put-in fee), for a day trip on the Erie Canal. We lucked out that 2008 was a "free" year. Usually, there is an Erie Canal Pass that you must purchase to boat on the canal. Fun in itself, and it also brought back memories of our vacation on the Erie Canal.

August 08 - Camping for Big Foot
During the summer, we watched some TV show about Big Foot in Ohio, and apparently the Salt Fork area is where he hangs out. So, Luke thinks we should go "camping for Big Foot." Terrific idea. Luke, Philip, Paqs and I make a weekend Trip to the Salt Fork Ohio State Park and trailered Happy Ours along as well. I like this trailering stuff. Carol and George pass on the trip.

2009

Summer 2009 - We purchased an extra dock at Bass Haven for Happy Ours. George makes a lot of use out of Happy Ours, and comes regularly to Lake Erie with the family (so my evil plan is working!). Philip starts taking it out too. Heck, even Carol took it out a few times. Happy Ours is fun to drive and fairly easy to dock.

2010

Summer 2010 - We didn't use Happy Ours, not even once. We did drag it to Lake Erie over the 4th of July, but she never went out. With the jet skis close at hand, we just never bothered to use Happy Ours.
